Five political parties/factions known as National Unity Alliance (NUA) is working right now to see if we can (or whether we should) have a single candidate to represent NUA in the upcoming Presidential election. All the leaders have met twice and discussed this issue and is to meet again next week.
The following options are on the table.
1. To forward a candidate from each party and compete individually in the first round of voting and divide the vote as much as possible to deny 50%+ to Qayyoom and unite in the second round of voting and defeat Qayyoom on one-on-one, in round two.
2. To agree to a single candidate and start the campaign with one candidate and defeat Qayyoom in round one itself.
3. To wait until Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Social Liberal Party (SLP) to officially nominate their candidates to discuss this issue.
4. A very interesting 4th proposal has been put forward by a lobby group. They propose that NUA leaders agree to an interim candidate, not affiliated to any party, and defeat Qayyoom in round one. This interim president and his/her running mate will then resign in 6 months after making a level playing field for all candidates including DRP members interested in competing. This interim president will not compete in the next election.
Since this is a very important national issue, I look forward for your comments.

I think the focus of NUA(though I fail to see any unity) should not be simply to represent a unified opposition to Maumoon, but to represent a viable and evolutionary mandate to the PEOPLE as well.
After all they are the ones who will vote for you.
This election is not, or should not be about one man! I for one am sick of hearing "Golhabo faiba!" "Baalaanamey baalaanamey"from the likes of children as young as 7yrs old.
I have read your manifesto and Im afraid that the only thing I found impressive was your strict policy on Drug trafficking and abuse. Aside from that, and despite the passion and resolve to bring about the many overdue changes in Gov policy- be it education, health care, housing; I failed to see any explanation as to HOW you were going to achieve the Goals you had specified.
That's what we want from you politicians! All this anti_G inflammatory rhetoric is starting to wear thin, and is quite frankly insulting to one's intelligence if you(all parties) think that's what should get you elected.
Mr.Umar, as a presidential candidate, I am willing to give you the chance to demonstrate to us, WHY we should elect you & HOW you plan to implement your policies. Simply overthrowing Maumoon is not good enough for me.
As for the other candidates, Anni is the patriot who had declared from the very onset that he would not run for presidency! Now all of a sudden he's changed his mind??Are we supposed to believe this was not the intent from the very begining?
He can be considered an activist who has been instrumental in setting in motion this vox populii(however underhand his tactis may have been at times), but certainly he cannot be considered the ideal presidential candidate, nor should we forget that he too has his hands tied by those very forces which tried to overthrown this government in the 80s(so his hands aren't exactly clean either- compared to you or Munnavar).
Also I doubt if the appointment of Latheef was coincidental to anni leaving the post either.
Its quite apparent that the potential presidential candidates lined up for us aren't exactly saints. And we shouldn't expect that to be the case either. However What we need from you all is leadership and sincerity, and SOLID REFORM POLICIES!(show us how you all are going to do better than Maumoon did)!
I'm vouching for Dr.Hassan Saeed & Dr.Waheed forming an alliance with you. From amongst all, I think you three have the the LEAST of what is needed to turn this country around.
But that's just wishful thinking on my part.
So what if Hassan saeed served as "Golhaa's AG"? So what is Waheed left the country to personal reasons? We seem to be able to whitewash and overlook the fact that Munnavar was as famously corrupt as Ibrahim Hussein Zaki, or that Anni is being influenced by the very same Sikka who shed Dhivehi blood to quench his lust for power.
Neither munnavar or anni can be said to have any greater credibility. And Im not buying the argument from his camp that If anni is elected he won't be just a One-Man Government. Maumoon said the same thing.
MDPs street politics and their DO may have been useful in getting us so far here, but that is NOT a reason enough to hand over the country to them on a silver platter.
And we shouldn't be one of those Asian countries who elect celebrities to the presidency.
Jus my opinion.
mamdhu said it 100% true.
im not interested in politics(the power-lust you all couldn't hold back) nor do im voting for either of you.
Give me one single solid reason why i should!
and good luck!
